>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, november 3rd. let's start with a quick first look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, good morning to you. the winds are a little breezy in the hills. but we are clear this morning. not tracking any rain. as we go through the next couple of hours, we are looking at still cool temperatures. in fact, numbers have dropped into the 30s for parts of our north bay valleys around napa. but by noontime we will look at

partly cloudy conditions, 50s and 60s around the bay. temperatures today will be held down and it will be breezy. in fact, we will be looking at breezy winds once again throughout the evening hours. so temperatures only in the 50s and 60s today so the cool trend, the dryer air mass with us this morning, it's going to stick around. i'll let you know for how long, when we will warm up, if we are going to see any rain. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. just one day after a fatal shooting at lax, a scare for passengers at sfo. police board a plane and escort a man off a jet blue flight. nick smith has this story that you will only see on abc7 news. >> he said if a plane is going to go down, this lane is going to be destroyed. >> that's what one passenger told us he heard a man overhear him scream during a jet blue flight 1136. >> he said is so loud and buoyant, that he caught my

attention. >> he spoke with the passenger, alex alexander, who caught part of the scary and confusing moments on my smartphone. >> my hands were shaky, my heart was racing. >> the flight was in route to sfo from long beach. patrick said as soon as the flight crew became aware of the threat, they called airport security who had police meet the plane when it landed. take a look. officers board the plane and immediately identify and escort the passenger off the plane. >> why are you taking the guy off the plane and maybe the threat is still on the plane? and the rest of the passengers had to stay on board. >> the flight was delayed for about 45 minutes. officials have not identified the passenger and there have been no reports of injuries. at sfo, nick smith, abc7 news. now to the latest in shooting at lax, gerardo hernandez is the first tsa agent

to be killed in the line of duty. >> his sister said he was checking passports when he was shot. he died with from a gunshot wound to the chest. he's survived by his wife, son and daughter. this morning we are learning more about the suspect, 23-year-old unemployed mechanic paul ciancia. federal prosecutors have already filed murder charges and he could face the death penalty. police also believe someone dropped him off at the airport on friday. they want to find out who that was. here's abc7 news reporter alec stone with the latest. >> several prosecutors have filed murder charges against the suspected gunmen in the deadly shooting at los angeles international airport of tsa officer gerardo hernandez and the wounding of four others. saturday night, 100-foot pylons were lit up over the airport in honor of him. his wife is distraught.

>> i am truly devastated. we are all heartbroken and we will miss him dearly. >> our hearts go out to the tsa officer who was shot and killed. >> two more tsa officers were wounded when 23-year-old paul ciancia took a rifle out of his bag friday morning and started firing. this video shows the ensuing mayhem. the fbi is just one of the agencies investigating the shooting. >> we found a statement where he made a conscious decision to make multiple tsa employees. >> and it could have been so much worse if officers had not chased the gun men through the airport terminal three. >> the fact they disabled the assailant within minutes was actually remarkable and saved untolled lives. >> reporter: ciancia was shot four times. he remains in the hospital and the hospital says he remains unresponsive.

the airport, full of fear and chaos friday morning, returned to normal operation saturday afternoon. alex stone, abc news, los angeles. >> one of the people caught in the crossfire was torrey bellucci. he's a host of the tv show "myth busters." here's what he is saying. >> everybody is flying down the corridor, jumping over chairs, jumping over people. people were taking cover. it was literally like my worst nightmare and it was happening. >> "myth busters" is shot in the bay area, although he was headed from lax to a video shoot in delaware. the shooting has caused dozens of cancellations and delays in the bay area. even though it occurred on friday, there's been a ripple effect. yesterday eight flights to and from lax were cancelled. flights could be affected again today, so be sure to check with your airline.

>> all lanes in richmond 580 are open this morning following a fatal crash. authorities say a pedestrian was struck and killed just before 10:00 last night as he tried to run across the interstate near harbor way. an alert was issued a half-hour later while the chp investigated. it was lifted about 1:00 this morning. no word yet on the identity of the word who was killed. the incident remains under investigation. the chp is investigating the cause of a fatal crash near stinson beach yesterday. one person was killed after a car went off a cliff on highway 1 just before 4:30 p.m. that car, a red honda, had been reported stolen out of vallejo. the driver was the only one in the car. friends and family of a santa rosa teenager who was shot and killed by a sheriffs deputy

gathered to thank the community for their support. 13-year-old andy lopez was shot on the 22nd holding an air rifle that looked like an ax48 assault rifle. we have the late forest santa rosa. >> reporter: as candles were arranged and a cross was adjusted for the growing memorial for 13-year-old andy lopez, it was not lost on a few people here that this day marks the day of the dead. >> every 1st and 2nd of november you come and celebrate the dead, or the loved ones of that passed away. >> andy lopez' parents were here a few hours. they left just before sunset. they did not want to speak on camera, but they said they will have an announcement on monday. they will join their team of attorneys to announce a federal lawsuit against the sonoma county sheriff's department. organizers say they had no connection of connecting the

13-year-old death to the day, they just wanted to support the lopez family. >> everyone wants to be here remembering andy. that's all it is. we don't want it talk about what happened to andy or anything like that. we just want to remember him. >> a lopez family attorney said the 13-year-old has not been laid to rest because his parents have been waiting for his grandmother to arrive from mexico. she arrived in california just in time to join them for the neighborhood event. in santa rosa, abc7 news. police are searching for a gunman who robbed customers at a san francisco hair salon yesterday. it happened just before noon at the pampered girl salon on gulf street in hayes valley. three customers were getting their hair and nails done when they busted inside taking money, smartphones and tablets.

police say robberies in the hayes neighborhood are rare in that neighborhood. san jose police are searching for a mentally handicapped man who has been missing since friday. 54-year-old man was last seen around 3:30 on vine street. authorities say conseco has a previous head injury that left him with diminished mental capacity. he walks a limp, he has a cane. he's described at 5'8", 140 pounds with black air and a beard. he was last seen wearing a black jacket, white t-shirt, black pants and flip-flops. in almeda county, sixteen agers have been rescued before getting lost hiking on mission peak regional preserve. they say they got to the top of the peak and lost the trail heading back. >> we got on the wrong route so then we tried backtracking, but then it started getting dark and we lost the trail and we ended up in the field so we called the cops and here we are. >> the east bay regional park police got a 911 call relayed from fremont police.

>> hillary clinton isn't even running for president yet, at -- but she's already picked up a key endorsement. democratic senator chuck schumer of new york is backing her. he's joined a chorus of other democrats urging hillary to run. he' announced his backing at an annual dinner last night. clinton said she's still considering her options. other potential candidates include vice president joe biden and new york governor andrew cuomo. coming up on "this week" as the flawed rollout of the affordable care act place the obama administration, george stephanopoulos goes one-on-one with white house senior advisor dan phifer. along with the issues surrounding healthcare.gov, phifer will also discuss the

continued fallout over the lateddest revelations of nsa spying. you can catch it right here on abc7 at 8:00. more than a year after 17-year-old trayvon martin was fatally shot by neighborhood watch volunteer george zimmerman, the city where it happened, sanford, florida, is rolling out a revamped neighborhood watch program. the sanford police department will outline the changes tuesday during a community meeting. revisions include restricting volunteers from carrying firearms, and from pursuing suspects. zimmerman was acquitted of a second degree murder charge back in july. the cal palace in daly city is expected to be packed again today with people attending one of the country's biggest gun shows. it's sponsored by the crossroads of the west. organizers say they do everything by the book and gun owners appreciate it. >> they won't even let me get a 30 round for my a.r. or nothing.

pretty soon you won't be told to turn them off before takeoffs and landing. federal aviation administration has lifted restriction necessary those -- for 37 years for fear they would interfere with radio transmissions. our property are looks at the chang. ♪ >> reporter: virgin america just released the new safety video but the admonitions to turn off devices soon will be moot. devices can stay on during and before landing as long asner airplane mode. making calls will still be band. we asked them via skype why it took so long for the faa to change the rules? >> the faa is a very conservative organization. safety always comes first. but now we are at the point the devices are safer, the technologies on the airplanes are safer and the way the airplanes are built makes it more possible. >> each airline must submit it's device plan for regulation. the rule may not be instantaneous. an estimated two-thirds of passengers carry mobile phones or smartphones on board and 40% have tablets. what the faa didn't make clear is whether video calls are whether video calls are

used while on airplanes. >> most of the airplanes can't support video chat, whether it's facetime or other video services. so if you use that, you slow down the experience for everybody. and on some systems you may even be booted off. >> one passenger wonders if more devices will be carried on board? >> who knows what the next thing for kids will be. it could be noisier on the plane. >> laptops still need to be turned off before takeoff and landing and in low visibility landing the crew may ask for all devices to be shut off. in san jose, david loui, abc7 news. a second bart labor union has ratified the contract agreement that brought an end to a second strike this year. yesterday a.t.u. said its members approved the contract seiu approved the contract friday. it includes a 15.4% raise, safer working condition and it requires bart workers to pay into their pensions and

increases healthcare costs. bart's board of directors will vote on the contract later this month. this morning portions of highway 101 in novato will be closed until 9:00. it is not a solid closer. the chp is closing sections of 101 between some boulevards in 15-minute intervals. the partial closer is to allow pg&e crews to install new power lines. estimated today an estimated 4,000 runners will hit the streets of san francisco for the u.s. half-marathon. let's take a live look at the golden gate bridge. to accommodate runners the bridge's east sidewalk closed from 5:00 until 9:00 this morning. the west sidewalk will be closed from 6:00 to 9:30. the race gets underway at 7:00 at vaness avenue and beach

street. and they will be running not in the rain? >> no. it will be clear out there. the sun is almost up at 6:38. we are looking for a sparkling morning? >> sparkling? >> yeah, i think so. and changes as we go through the afternoon. northwest winds will be moderate. we do have a dryer atmosphere, although the fog, you are wondering where that is. we had that yesterday. it's down in salinas and monterey with visibility reduced to about three quarters of a mile. dryer atmosphere with us throughout not only today, but tomorrow, as well. bringing below average temperatures out there. but look at the trade-off. a gorgeous start to the day. 51 san francisco. it's 46 in san carlos. good morning half moon bay, 50 for you. we are look leave from our sutro tower camera where, yes, nice and clear. numbers in and around the

40-degree mark. briefly we were down to 35 in napa earlier. but with a little wind we have made it back up to 40. 40 concord. and outside from the studios here's a look the from our roof camera. you will see we are looking at the clear sky. wind advisory still up in the north bay hill for moderate northerly winds throughout the morning hours and this evening. cooler and breezy today for everyone. official sunrise 6:38. it sets at 5:09. we are looking at conditions now in the higher elevations anywhere from 20 to 25 miles an hour. on top of mt. tam, gusts up to 35 miles an hour. so, yes, it is breezy out there. those breezy winds will be transporting that dryer air mass and throughout the day today northwest winds anywhere from ten to twenty miles an hour. it will be cool and we will look for the temperatures to stay cooler than what we've been used to. so it is november.

we should be looking not only at the cooler conditions but the chance of rain, nothing doing of course for today. here we are 11:00 and a few clouds begin to filter in behind the trough. that will allow for partly cloudy, cooler conditions, rain chances perhaps come back into the picture by next weekend. in fact, the north coast could see maybe a few sprinkles by thursday. but that stempniak is looking weaker and weaker. 67 in san jose with 56 in super steen no on the peninsula. cool afternoon. the breezy winds, 66 redwood city and just 58 in half moon bay. san francisco without the fog and a little bit of one sunshine. 68 in novato and mid-60s calistoga. by the water in vallejo, 65. more mid-60s for berkeley and oakland today. out over the hills, numbers here out of the 70s with pleasanton coming in at 67.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. a dryer and cooler air mass is invading the bay area with winds anywhere from 20 to 25 miles an hour in the upper elevations. wind advisory still in effect for the higher elevations of the north bay. breezy elsewhere and that will allow for a cooler afternoon temperatures. in fact, we are starting out with the clear sky but with few extra clouds, we will call it partly cloudy. breezy today. 50s along the coast. 60s elsewhere. we are looking at a slight warming trend come midweek, but more importantly, will we see any rain? i'll let you no i coming up, carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. >> happening now, the new york city marathon is underway. more than 47,000 participants are flooding city streets today for the 43rd running of the marathon. the event was cancelled at the last minute last year due to super storm sandy.

officials say the boston marathon bombing in april has resulted in increased security, particularly near the finish line in central park. german officials say they would love to go to russia to question edward snowden. they would like to know exactly how extensive the spying of the national agency was. berlin officials also want snowden to show them the original documents the former nsa analysts has leaked. records show the u.s. has speed -- spied on leader of 35 countries, including german's chancellor, angela merkel. >> one of the original mercury astronaughts has been laid to rest. mr. carpenter was 88 years old. john glenn, another mercury astronaut, was among the mourners yesterday. he was the second american to

now med-i-cal has been included -- or expand to include adults without children and a family of four with income less than $32,500. brenda is the chief operating officer for lifelong medical care has 15 health clinics around the bay area. >> this is huge. this is really, really huge. i mean, because there are a lot of people who have not had any way of accessing care at all. >> she said in the past those without health insurance were forced to go to much more expensive emergency rooms where, by law, everyone must be treated. >> so a lot of those people will now be eligible for some type of insurance to help them. mainly med-i-cal. >> to determine your eligibility go to a community health clinic or contact "cover california" through it's website or hotline. those who don't qualify may

called full body cryotherapy which employ he is ultracold to affect the body. science reporter carolyn johnson has the details. >> it may look like a sauna but it's actually reverse. a super cold treatment known as cryotherapy. the co-owner said the treatment originated in japan in the 1970 for rheumatoid arthritis. you you spend two or three minutes down in this cold sauna. this takes skin temperatures down to 30 degrees fahrenheit. so cold that they wear protective clothing. >> gloves, socks, underwear and earmuffs. >> like standing outside in the snow with shorts and a tank top on. it allowed this woman to return to exercise, despite arthritis. >> i'm able to do my water arobics and yoga. >> cold has become a hot topic in sports medicine. some experts now believe

lowering an athletes body immediately after exercise can speed up recover and lessen the pain associated with exercise. but the biology is complicated and there's debate over how different methods of cooling actually effect the body. this physical therapist has worked with the cryotherapy chamber and said he's seen results. >> we really want to get all that inflammatory processing going and get it moving along and getting it out. with the cold it really is that. -- does that. >> others are more cautious. craig heller, stanford biologist, helped develop a deadvice that drains heats from the palms of athletes hands called core control. it is now commercialized. ice baths can accomplish the same benefits, but he's skeptical of the short time used in the cryotherapy sauna. >> just a few minutes in very cold air or gas is not going to do much to lower your body temperature. >> he does believe the reaction to the short bursts of cold will

san francisco even though today the cooler air mass settles in, you will be a little warmer with some sunshine. it took a while to bring in the sun yesterday. santa rosa is already up 48 degrees. from our roof camera right now, the winds not much of a factor here downtown, but the wind advisory is still up for the north bay hill. the higher elevations will be breezy throughout the afternoon and into the evening hours. we are looking at the sun setting at 5:09. right now the hilltop winds are gusty, up to 24 miles an hour, even down around this road. and mt. tam 18 miles an hour gusts with knoxville creek and atlas peak over 20 miles an hour. it will be breezy throughout the afternoon. then we will introduce a few clouds. the trough has moved off to the east. now comes the cooler air spilling on in. that will allow for the winds to be anywhere from 10 to 20 miles an hour this afternoon. the north winds keeping the fog out of the bay. let's take a look at the week ahead. you will notice that with higher
